Did I really hear from God?

Recently, I was reading through the Old Testament and I felt like my personal life was following the trek of the Israelites in their quest to enter the promised land.  I felt it so strongly and I had confirming words that suggested I was hearing correctly from God.  But, a real estate deal fell through and this made me wonder if I really heard from God.  I believe that I did hear God speaking but I may have been in error by applying that word and direction to this particular real estate property.  It is so easy to hear something and apply it incorrectly but I do know that when God speaks, He sends confirming words to validate what we heard.  Sometimes, I just wish there would be no way for me to misinterpret it.
